Understanding When and How to Use Intact Cells and Isolated Mitochondria in Investigating Cellular Bioenergetics
Join us for an exceptional opportunity—one-on-one training in an intimate setting with renowned cellular bioenergeticists, David Nicholls and Martin Brand. (2 days)
David Nicholls’ lab focuses on the function and physiology of mitochondria in intact cells, with an emphasis on their roles in the life and death of stressed neurons, and also on the understanding of the mechanism of insulin secretion and its failure in type-one diabetes. Martin Brand’s lab focuses on the understanding of how the function of mitochondria within cells is regulated to give the exquisite control of nutrient use and energy turnover that is characteristic of healthy cells.
In this two-day workshop, you will work with these renowned cellular bioenergetic researchers, delving into the depths of bioenergetics and mitochondrial function, learning how its regulation and effects on cells can be described quantitatively, and of how we might be able to alter it to affect conditions such as diabetes, obesity, degenerative diseases and ageing.
You will learn how to design and perform XF experiments with isolated mitochondria and cells, to obtain this valuable bioenergetic information, and how to understand and interpret this data, and understand its implications to your research.

Pre-workshop Laboratory (Optional)
Learn how to isolate rat muscle mitochondria with H Mogensen, Ph.D., from the Department of Biomedical Sciences, at the University of Copenhagen. (1 day)
Add an extra day and enhance your cellular bioenergetics experience. This additional one-day, preworkshop wet lab is ‘hands-on’—you will prepare and trouble-shoot the quality of mitochondrial preparations to obtain successful, meaningful assay results.
Space is limited to the first 8 attendees.
During the evening dinners at both the pre-workshop, and the workshop itself, you will have the opportunity to further discuss your research, or ask bioenergetic questions with David, and Martin, as well as other workshop participants.
Prerequisites:
- Experience with oxygen consumption measurements is required. XF or Clark electrode.
- Familiarity with designing and performing XF bioenergetic experiments is recommended.
