Understanding When and How to Use Intact Cells and Isolated Mitochondria in Investigating Bioenergetics
Advanced XF Training - Course information
Join us for an exceptional opportunity, one-on-one training in an intimate setting with renowned cellular bioenergeticists, David Nicholls and Martin Brand.
Date:
April 3-5 & April 10-12, 2012
Location:
Buck Institute for Research and Aging
8001 Redwood Blvd.
Novato, California 94945
Instructors:
David Nicholls, PhD, FSRE & Martin Brand, PhD
David Nicholls' research has focused on the function and physiology of mitochondria in intact cells, with an emphasis on their roles in the life and death of stressed neurons, and also on the understanding of the mechanism of insulin secretion and its failure in type-one diabetes. Martin Brand's research focuses on the understanding of how the function of mitochondria within cells is regulated to give the exquisite control of nutrient use and energy turnover that is characteristic of healthy cells.
In this 2 ½ - 3 day advanced training course, you will work with these renowned cellular bioenergetic researchers, delving into the depths of bioenergetics and mitochondrial function, learning how its regulation and effects on cells can be described quantitatively, and of how we might be able to alter it to affect conditions such as diabetes, obesity, degenerative diseases and aging. Experience with the XF Analyzer, or other respirometry methods such as the Clark Electrode, and familiarity with designing and performing bioenergetic experiments is recommended.
You will learn:
- How to design and perform XF assays with isolated mitochondria and whole cells to obtain valuable bioenergetic information
- How to review and interpret XF data, and understand its far reaching implications to your research
- The Ins and Outs of Isolating Mitochondria (Optional ½ day on Day 3)
