Competitive Revision Applications
NIH Announcement NOT-OD-09-058  (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-09-058.php)
Application Deadline: April 21, 2009

Note that revision applications (formerly called competitive supplements) will support a significant expansion of the scope or research protocol of approved and funded projects. Supplements (up to 2 years) will support research objectives and aims that are outside the scope of an approved parent grant; they are not revised applications for funding.

There is no limit on the amount of funding requested, other than that requests for equipment within the revision application cannot exceed $100,000.

Funding decisions and awards will be issued on or prior to September 30, 2009 for applications submitted in response to this notice, and on or prior to September 30, 2010 for applications submitted in response to any reissuance (if any) of this notice.

To be eligible, the parent grant must be active at the time the revision application is submitted, and the research proposed in the revision must be accomplished within the current competitive segment. That is, the period of support requested for the revision (up to two years for FY09 applications) cannot exceed the current project period end date of the parent grant, including projects on a no-cost extension.
Please note that the NIH institutes and centers (IC) may have their own specific areas of emphasis. These can be found on individual IC web sites available at http://grants.nih.gov/recovery/ic_supp.php.

Administrative Supplements
NOT-OD-09-056. (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-09-056.php )
Application Deadlines: OPEN, though some institutes and centers (IC) may have specific deadlines.

Potential applicants should review the instructions for Administrative Supplements issued by their funding institute or center (IC) before responding to this Notice. Some ICs will consider administrative supplements only in target areas identified on their Web sites.
To be eligible, the parent grant must be active and the research/scientific activities proposed in the supplement must be accomplished within the current competitive segment. The proposed supplement MUST be within the general scope of the peer-reviewed activities and aims approved within the parent grant, including projects on a no-cost extension.

It is anticipated that supplement funding will be awarded within a short period after receipt of the supplement request. Please note that in general NIH expects to award supplements of not more than 50 percent of the amount of the parent grant, including requests for equipment purchases of under $100,000.

OTHER GRANT OPPORTUNITIES FOR FUNDING INSTRUMENT PURCHASES (http://grants.nih.gov/recovery/)

Shared Instrument Grant (SIG)
Application Deadline: Closed March 23, 2009
http://www.ncrr.nih.gov/biomedical_technology/shared_instrumentation/

The SIG program provides a cost-effective mechanism for groups of NIH-supported investigators to obtain commercially-available equipment that costs more than $100,000. Instruments in this price range are typically too expensive to be obtained through a research project grant. The maximum SIG award is $500,000. These grants cover the direct costs of the instruments; the grantee institution must meet costs for maintenance, service contracts, and technical support. Awards are for one year only and are not renewable.

SIG awards are made to domestic public and non-profit institutions, including health professional schools, graduate institutions, hospitals, health departments and research organizations. To be eligible for a SIG, an institution must identify three or more major users of the technology who are principal investigators on active NIH awards funded through the P01, R01, U01, R35, R37, DP1, or DP2 mechanisms. However, the principal investigator of the SIG itself does not have to be NIH funded.

NIH Challenge Grant
Application Deadline: April 27, 2009
http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/challenge_award/

This new program will support research on Challenge Topics which address specific scientific and health research challenges in biomedical and behavioral research that will benefit from significant 2-year jumpstart funds. Challenge Areas, defined by the NIH, focus on specific knowledge gaps, scientific opportunities, new technologies, data generation, or research methods that would benefit from an influx of funds to quickly advance the area in significant ways. The research in these areas should have a high impact in biomedical or behavioral science and/or public health.
