As the largest single consumer of oxygen in the body, the brain is exquisitely sensitive to changes in bioenergetic loads. Neurons require high bursts of rapid and transient ATP production to restore and maintain membrane polarization and cellular viability following synaptic activation. Not surprisingly, many diseases of the central nervous system, including Alzheimer’s disease, are associated with mitochondrial dysfunction. Learn how elucidation of the mechanisms of agents that positively modify these bioenergetic defects is essential for the development of therapeutics for neurodegeneration.
